Furniture Care Guide

Every Dwell piece is made to be lived with. Find your material below for the simplest ways to keep it looking its best. For guidance specific to your exact piece, see the Care dropdown on its product page.

Before you begin

  • Always check the cleaning code on your item's label and follow it.
  • Test any cleaning product in a hidden spot first to be sure it is compatible.
  • When a stain will not budge, a professional cleaner is the safest next step.
  • Improper or lack of maintenance may void your warranty. Pet damage, spills, and general wear from normal use are not covered under warranty.
Fabric & UpholsterySofas, chairs, ottomans & upholstered beds
  • Vacuum regularly with an upholstery attachment to lift dust and grit that can wear on the fibers.
  • Have upholstered pieces professionally cleaned about once a year.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth — never rub. Work from the outer edge inward to avoid a stain ring.
  • Avoid strong cleaning chemicals on or near the fabric.
  • Pilling is normal wear, not a defect. Remove it with a lint shaver, pilling comb, or fabric de-fuzzer — fabric dry and pulled taut, working in small circles.

If your fabric is water-safe

  • Blot with cool, distilled water only.
  • No hot water — it can set a stain.
  • No tap water — its minerals can leave a ring.

If your cushion casings are removable

  • Remove casings before cleaning so moisture is not trapped in the cushion core, and let them air-dry fully before putting them back on.
  • Never machine-dry casings — the tumble method can damage the fabric.
LeatherSofas, chairs & leather-upholstered pieces
  • Dust and vacuum with a crevice attachment at least once a month to clear the seams.
  • Wipe weekly with a soft, dry cloth — gently, do not rub.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading or cracking.
  • Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth (microfiber is ideal) — do not rub.
  • To lift a spot, mix ½ mild fragrance-free, dye-free soap with ½ cool distilled water. Apply with a slightly damp cloth or sponge, rinse by blotting with distilled water, then blot dry.
  • No strong or household chemicals near the leather.
  • Do not rest sharp objects on it, and keep newspapers or magazines off — their ink can transfer.
VelvetVelvet-upholstered sofas, chairs & benches
  • Vacuum with a handheld or hose attachment at least once a month.
  • Use a soft-bristled velvet brush to lift lint or pet hair before cleaning.
  • Velvet is typically cleaning code S — use mild, water-free solvents only. Think of it as the furniture equivalent of "dry clean only."
  • Blot spills gently with a dry towel — do not rub.
  • Let velvet air-dry fully, then brush again with the velvet brush to refresh the texture.
  • Have velvet professionally cleaned every 2–3 years.
  • Keep away from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading.
WoodTables, desks, dressers, beds & casegoods
  • Wipe weekly with a lint-free cloth.
  • Wipe up spills right away and blot dry with a soft, clean cloth. For spills, use a soft cloth with a little mild detergent (like dish soap) in water, then dry with 100% cotton.
  • Keep away from moisture sources such as humidifiers, and from direct sunlight and humidity to prevent fading or cracking.
  • No abrasives or harsh chemicals.
  • A furniture touch-up marker or crayon can color-correct small scratches that appear over time.
  • Real wood is handmade from natural materials — some variation in color, texture, and grain is normal and part of its beauty.

For dining, coffee & side tables

  • Use coasters under all beverages and never place hot items directly on the surface.
  • Use felt pads under décor, and keep newspapers or magazines off — their ink can transfer. Indoor use only.
  • On dining tables, use protective pads and placemats under plates and serving dishes, and move accessories monthly to prevent impressions in the wood.

For desks

  • Use a protective pad when writing with a ballpoint pen.
Marble & Faux MarbleTable tops, consoles & surfaces
  • Wipe weekly with a lint-free cloth.
  • For spills, clean the surface right away with a soft cloth and a little mild detergent in water, then dry with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Keep away from moisture sources such as humidifiers, and from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Use felt pads under anything that could scratch, and use coasters under all beverages.
  • Never place hot items directly on the surface. Indoor use only.
  • No bleach-based or abrasive cleaners.
  • Marble is handmade from natural material — variation in veining, color, and texture is normal.

For dining tables

  • Use protective pads and placemats under plates and serving dishes.
GlassTable tops & glass surfaces
  • Wipe weekly with a lint-free cloth.
  • Clean the top with glass cleaner and a soft cloth — or mild detergent in water, buffed with a soft, clean cloth. Best done after each use.
  • For tough spots, mix baking soda, white vinegar, and water; spray it on, let it sit 2–3 hours, then dry with a soft, clean cloth.
  • Keep away from moisture sources such as humidifiers, and from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Do not put heavy items on glass, and use felt pads under anything that could scratch.
  • Never place hot items directly on the top, and use coasters under all beverages. Indoor use only.
  • No abrasive chemicals.

For dining tables

MetalBases, frames & metal surfaces
  • Wipe weekly with a lint-free cloth.
  • Wipe up spills right away and blot dry with a soft, clean cloth. For spills, use a soft cloth with a little mild detergent in water, then dry with 100% cotton.
  • Keep away from moisture sources such as humidifiers, and from direct sunlight and humidity.
  • Use felt pads under anything that could scratch, and use coasters under all beverages.

RugsArea rugs & runners
  • Blot spills immediately to keep them from setting into the rug.
  • Press firmly with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible — do not rub, which drives the stain deeper.
  • For stains, mix cool water, white vinegar, and a mild detergent (like dish soap). Apply the foam that rises to the top with a clean cloth, then blot away residue with a damp, clean cloth.
  • For pet stains, absorb all liquid with a dry paper towel, sprinkle baking soda over the area, and leave for 5 minutes. Spray the solution over it, gently scrub, let it sit, then vacuum up the powder.
  • For hard-to-remove stains, professional cleaning is recommended.
